Now, this is actually AWESOME news for die-hard Buffy fans! Last week it was reported that Joss Whedon would be executive producing a reboot of his iconic series Buffy the Vampire Slayer with a woman of colour in the role of the slayer. However, the reboot might not be exactly as it seemed when it was initially reported.

Yes, Joss Whedon is executive producing and Monica Breen on writing duties. And Yes, there will be a woman of colour in the lead role, but the new series will focus on an entirely new slayer. As it turns out rather than being a reboot the new series will work as a revival.

Needless to say, I’m absolutely stoked at the news. As a massive fan of the original series and the expanded Buffyverse it created, I couldn’t quite understand why Whedon would actually go ahead rebooting something that in my opinion is already perfect. Yes, that includes the divisive season Six as well!

Now Monica Breen has turned to Twitter to suggest that the original article reported by The Hollywood Reporter may have missed a few details. In the lengthy post, she writes, “There is only one Buffy. One Xander, one Willow, Giles, Cordelia, Oz, Tara, Kennedy, Faith, Spike, Angel … They can’t be replaced.”

She concludes her post with “It could be time to meet a new Slayer. … And that’s all I can say.”

While her statement is vague without giving too many details, it does suggest that as a writer she’s not interested in recreating Buffy, but instead, she wants to further explore and expand on the Buffyverse with a new story surrounding a slayer who is a woman of colour. This decision is actually 100% in the spirit of the series finale, which saw Buffy sharing her “gift” with hundreds of potential slayers all over the world.

This also opens up the possibility of having some of the original cast members making appearances throughout the series which is something I and many other fans of the original series would love to see. Sarah Michelle Gellar, you better be ready to pick up the stake again!

I can’t freakin’ wait!
