If you grew up in the 1980s, there would have been two movies that you either enjoyed or were somewhat disturbed by. Those were The Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal. While the latter in particular was groundbreaking puppetry at its best (thanks to the marvellous talents of Jim Henson), it was also the source of many’s children’s nightmares due to the villainous and grotesque evil Skeksis.

Well, children of the 80s rejoice! Because not only is the cult classic getting a prequel in the form of a Netflix limited series, the all-star voice cast is definitely worth writing about.

Titled Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, the series will feature the voice talents of Taron Egerton (the Kingsman films), Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) and Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones) set as respective Gefling heroes RianBrea, and Deet.

Voicing the Skeksis & Mystics will be Mark HamillHarvey FiersteinJason IsaacsRalph InesonKeegan-Michael KeyÓlafur Darri ÓlafssonSimon Pegg, and Andy Samberg. While Aughra will be voiced by Donna Kimball.

Also joining them will be Helena Bonham-CarterToby Jones, Alicia VikanderCaitriona BalfeHarris DickinsonNatalie Dormer, Eddie IzzardTheo JamesShazad LatifGugu Mbatha-Raw, and Mark Strong. While additional characters will be voiced by puppeteers from the production, Alice Dinnean, Louise GoldNeil Sterenberg and Victor Yerrid.

The original Dark Crystal is a classic hero’s journey about self-discovery and restoring a once-vibrant world to its former glory. The new series focuses on the events set many years before the original, in which the surviving Gelflings and the Mystics must organise a rebellion against the sinister Skeksis, who have corrupted the Crystal of Truth and poisoning the planet of Thra with their evil magic.

In addition to the awesome casting announcement, Netflix has also debuted the first official images of the series.

Also to the relief of many, I’m pleased to announce that series has been made with The Jim Henson Company (executive produced by Jim Henson’s daughter, Lisa Henson) and will be 100% puppetry! So there’s no denying that the series hopes to capture the essence of the original film for a whole new generation.

The series is expected to premiere sometime in 2019.

Are you excited to return to the world of The Dark Crystal?
